sunelle

How it works

  1. 01

    Describe it

Write the meaning in your own words: a feeling, an inside joke, the way someone makes you feel.

  2. 02

    Choose your word

We suggest five new, easy-to-say words, each with its pronunciation. Pick the one that fits.

  3. 03

    We check it

We search for the word in dictionaries in 16 languages and on the web, and check it for unwanted meanings in other languages.

  4. 04

    It's yours

Your word gets its own dictionary page, a pronunciation, a certificate and a card to share. No one else can have it in this dictionary.

Have a word you made up yourself? We can check and record that too.

What you receive: everything is digital

  • Your word's own page in the online dictionary, with its meaning and pronunciation.
  • A certificate page, ready to print or save as a PDF.
  • A high-resolution poster image (PNG, A4 at 300 dpi; also prints well on A3), ready for home or a print shop.
  • Share images (square and story) as PNG files.
  • A proof file with the independent timestamp (OpenTimestamps, .ots).
  • An e-mail with all the links, usually within seconds of payment. Nothing physical is shipped.

What's in the Gift plan?

Coining and recording the word is the same in both plans. With a Gift, we also take care of delivering it to the person you love and making that moment special.

  • The word is recorded to the person you give it to, not to you; their page also names you as the giver.
  • On the day you choose, at 09:00 in their city, a personal e-mail reaches them. It can even be a birthday a year from now.
  • The e-mail carries the word's gift card and your personal note. You get the card too, if you would rather hand it over yourself.
  • Your note appears only in that e-mail, never on any page. Their e-mail address is kept for 30 days in case it needs to be sent again, then deleted.
  • Page, certificate, poster and timestamp are included, as with the Word plan.
Example gift card: "Dear Ayşe," above the word sunelle and its meaning, with "From: Can" at the bottom.

What you get, honestly

  • Your word is recorded to you in our dictionary. While your record is valid, nobody else can register it with us.
  • It is not a trademark and not legal ownership. If you want to use the word commercially, you need to register a trademark separately.
  • We don't claim a word has never been said by anyone, anywhere. We claim it was not found in the sources we checked, on the date we checked them.
  • Your record lives on this website and is valid for as long as the site is online and run by us. Every record is independently timestamped: download the proof files to show the date it was recorded.

Questions and answers

What is A Word For?

A Word For is an online service that coins a brand-new word for a meaning you describe: a feeling, a moment or a person. We check that the word does not already exist and record it to you in a public online dictionary, with its own page, a certificate and an independent timestamp.

Is it a real word?

It is a newly coined word with a real, public dictionary entry on awordfor.com that anyone can visit. It is not added to official dictionaries such as Oxford, Merriam-Webster or TDK; it lives in A Word For, the dictionary of one.

Do I own the word?

You get a symbolic, personal record: while it is valid, no one else can have the same word in this dictionary. It is not a trademark or legal ownership, and other people can still say and use the word.

How do you check that a word is new?

Before recording, every word is searched in dictionaries in 16 languages and with an exact-match web search, and reviewed for unwanted meanings in other languages. The page shows the result and the date of the check.

How long does it take, and what do I receive?

Coining takes about a minute. Right after payment you receive, by e-mail and online: the word's dictionary page with its pronunciation, a certificate to print or save as a PDF, a high-resolution poster image, share images and a timestamp proof file. Everything is digital; nothing is shipped.

Can I give a word as a gift?

Yes. With the Gift plan the word is recorded to the person you choose and reaches them by e-mail at 09:00 on the day you pick, with a gift card and your note. With a gift voucher, they write the meaning and choose the word themselves.

How much does it cost?

One word is $12; the Gift plan and the gift voucher are $24. Prices are one-time, with no subscription, and include VAT where it applies. Payments are handled by Paddle.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Within 14 days of purchase you can ask for a full refund without giving a reason, or swap your word for a new one once, free of charge.

Can I record a word I made up myself?

Yes. A word your family, friends or partner already use goes through the same checks, and if it is unique we record it to you.
